ABBE Level 3 Award in Inspection & Commissioning of Commercial Fire Sprinkler Systems (East Kilbride)

Qualification Purpose: This course relates to the Inspection, Commissioning of Commercial Fire Sprinkler Systems design in accordance with the LPC Rules inc BS EN 12845. Please Note: The  course and qualification is referenced as the Bafsa Competency Exam 'Unit 6' in the LPS1048 Issue 6 Scheme document 'GN13 Competency Requirements’ and replaces the LPCB Inspection Module 1&2 Competency Exam.

This qualification is required to demonstrate LPS1048 Issue 6 Scheme competency compliance for Final Inspection and Commissioning verification practice for Category B, C, D, E & G sprinkler works, and Final Inspection only verification practice for Category F sprinkler works.

The qualification addresses the knowledge and skills required to determine the sprinkler design in relation to; the storage configurations, inspection of the system during and at the end of the installation, the commissioning of the system and an understanding of the required ongoing maintenance of the system.

Eligibility criteria: Candidates must be aged 18+ who hold a total of three years experience covering all the disciplines below :

  • Inspection of Pumphouse installation
  • Inspection of wet and dry installation control valves
  • Inspection of sprinkler pipework, hanger positions and head spacing
  • Commissioning of Pumphouse • Commissioning of wet and dry installation control valves
  • Commissioning of monitoring systems
  • An understanding of Maintenance is advisable but not essential

Enrolment Requirements: FULL NAME, PERSONAL email address and Photographic ID is to be provided by the candidate prior to course access. 

Qualifications Units:  To achieve qualification certification the candidate must achieve three  units:

Unit 1 Inspection Inspection of commercial sprinkler systems in accordance with LPC Rules inc BS EN 12845.
Unit 2 Commissioning
Commissioning of pump houses, tanks, installation control valves and monitoring systems.
Unit 3 Maintenance (Theory)
Theoretical understanding of periodic maintenance routines

Time on Programme: As experienced workers candidates are expected to be able to complete the full programme in 6 months with a maximum time on programme of 12 months being permitted (Candidates must include submission of post course work evidence within the programme duration) 

Programme: Initially, 3 days in the classroom with a Multiple-Choice Exam on Day 3 to be followed with regular submission of video evidence through the BAFSA e-learning portal ( to be completed within in 6 months)

Inspection sheets - To be uploaded within 3 months of the start of the course
Commissioning sheets - To be uploaded within 5 months of the start of the course
Video evidence - To be uploaded within 5 months of the start of the course

The Course Assessor requires 4 weeks to assess a candidates work from the date of submission. You will need to adhere to the timeframe above.

  • If submissions are late there is no opportunity to resubmit work.
    Providing candidates submit work within the timeframe above there will be 4 weeks to resubmit work on the assessors comments, if required. 
    Note: Only one opportunity is provided to resubmit work.
  • If  work falls short of the minimal requirements you will need to retake the course.
  • Exam Results will appear on the e-portal within 4 weeks of the exam date. 
  • Exam Resits are to be completed within 12 months of the start of the course. Resit results will be uploaded to your learning portal within 4 weeks of taking the exam.

Successful completion of the programme will require :

  • Full attendance at the 3 day in person course
  • Submission of a full site inspection sheet including water supplies and installation.
  • Submission of a end of contract Commissioning sheet
  • Submission of videos providing evidence of competency and experience.
  • An Examination Pass
Certification:

A certificate is only awarded once the candidate portfolio of evidence gained during the programme is deemed successfully completed. This process requires an independent quality assurance process which can take a minimum of 28 days following completion of the online and practical modules. This ensures the robustness of the course. 

Skillcard:

You may or may not know the Industry Skillcard (CSCS)  for Fire Sprinkler Project Engineers (Blue Skilled Worker Card) has a requirement that above mentioned course ie Inspection & Commissioning is held alongside an appropriate SMSTS or SSSTS certificate. Please Note: An ‘Attendance Certificate’ will be provided to fire sprinkler engineers who have less than three years experience but complete the course. No qualification certificate will be issued.
