This /course qualification covers:
- Classification and design of High-rise sprinkler systems in accordance with LPC Rules inc BS EN 12845.
• Design of Non-Storage Sprinkler systems using Full Hydraulic calculation methods methods
Please Note: The course and qualification is referenced as the Bafsa Competency Exam 'Unit 4' in the LPS1048 Issue 6 Scheme document 'GN13 Competency Requirements’
Course/Qualification Purpose:
This course relates to the classification and design of High Rise and Non-Storage Sprinkler Systems Using Full Hydraulic Calculations in accordance with the LPC rules incl. BS EN 12845.
The course aim is to address the knowledge and skills required to classify and design a high rise and non-storage sprinkler systems using full hydraulic calculations.
The qualification consists of:
Unit 1 - Classification and Design of High-Rise sprinkler systems.
Unit 2 - Basic Hydraulics
Unit 3 - Classification of Non-Storage sprinkler systems
Unit 4 - Pipework Sizing using Full Hydraulic Calculations
Unit 5 - Water supply Design for High Rise and Full Hydraulic Calculated Systems
Eligibility criteria:
Candidates shall have the following before they can be entered onto the course:
- The Candidates must have a minimal of 3 Years design Experience and
- The Candidate shall have Passed the LPCB basic competence review or
- The Candidate shall have passed the Bafsa classification and pre calculation course / ABBE L5 Diploma in Design
- The candidate must have a mentor with High Rise and FHC design experience[1].
[1] This can be in house or through a third-party scheme (supervised)
Enrolment Requirements: FULL NAME, PERSONAL email address and Photographic ID is to be provided by the candidate prior to course access. Qualification Certificates are to be uploaded at the time of enrolment.
Qualifications Units: To achieve qualification certification the candidate must achieve five units:
Unit 1 - Classification and Design of High-Rise sprinkler systems.
Unit 2 - Basic Hydraulics
Unit 3 - Classification of Non-Storage sprinkler systems
Unit 4 - Pipework Sizing using Full Hydraulic Calculations
Unit 5 - Water supply Design for High Rise and Full Hydraulic Calculated Systems
Successful completion of the programme will require :
- Attend 10 days during the virtual classroom
- Completion of the 15off pieces of course work within a set timescale.
- Attend a Technical interview (Which will be recorded)
Time on Programme: As experienced workers candidates are expected to be able to complete the full programme in 18 months. (Candidates must include submission of post course work evidence within the programme duration)
Programme: Initially, 1 day per week (for 10 weeks) attending the virtual classroom followed by regular submission of course work through the BAFSA e-learning portal (stipulated timeframes are provided within the candidate information pack and submissions must be completed within in 12 months following completion of classroom attendance)
Coursework ‘1’ - Is a series of Questions that have to be answered.
Coursework ‘2’ - Is a series of Hydraulic Questions that have to be answered.
Coursework ‘3’ - Is a Hand calculation using the Hazen Williams formula
Coursework ‘4’ - Is an NPSH Calculation
Coursework ‘5’ - Is a series of Questions that have to be answered.
Coursework ‘6’ - Is a question relating the pump sizing of a precalculated High rise installation.
Coursework ‘7’ - Is a question relating the pump sizing of a calculated High-rise installation.
Coursework ‘8’ - Is a hydraulic calculation which shall be carried out on a tree system
(Using a calculation package).
Coursework ‘9’ - Is a hydraulic calculation which shall be carried out on a Loop system
(Using a calculation package).
Coursework ‘10’ - Is a hydraulic calculation which shall be carried out on a Grid system
(Using a calculation package).
Coursework ‘11’ - Is an essay analysing the findings and difference between a tree, loop and
grid system calculation.
Coursework ‘12’
Using the results from the previous tree system calculations you will need to develop a figure 9 curve and work out the required :
1. Suction pipe size
2. NPSH Calculation
3. Effective tank capacity and Size
Coursework ‘13’ - Work out the classification, system type and carry out a calculation.
Coursework ‘14’ - Is a hydraulic calculation which shall be carried out on a school (Using a calculation package).
Coursework ‘Final Project’
Is a Submit 1 design high Rise
High Rise project for non-storage purposes, it can be a school, retail unit or office – it's your choice.
The design can be one you have carried out during your work or an adapted piece of work you have done, where you may need to add a pumphouse or carry out a calculation on a pre calculated system you have completed.
It must have a Superior supply pumphouse.
Submit 1 design Fhc
Submit a Fully Hydraulically calculated project for non-storage purposes, it can be a school, retail unit or office – it's your choice.
The design can be one you have carried out during your work or an adapted piece of work you have done, where you may need to add a pumphouse or carry out a calculation on a pre calculated system you have completed.
It must have a Superior supply pumphouse
ASSESSMENT
The Course Assessor requires 4 weeks to assess a candidates work from the date of submission. You will need to adhere to the timeframe above.
- If submissions are late there is no opportunity to resubmit work.
Providing candidates submit work within the timeframe above there will be 4 weeks to resubmit work on the assessors comments, if required.
Note: Only one opportunity is provided to resubmit work. - If work falls short of the minimal requirements you will need to retake the course.
Successful completion of the programme will require :
- 90% attendance of the 10 days virtual classroom at the 3 day in person course
- passmark for all formal assessment (coursework)
- Attending a Technical Interview
A certificate is only awarded once the candidate portfolio of evidence gained during the programme is deemed successfully completed. This process requires an independent quality assurance process which can take a minimum of 28 days following completion of the online and practical modules. This ensures the robustness of the course.
Currently this course leads to a BAFSA Certificate (full qualification status is pending)
